An overtime hour leaves you £17.72. It is paid at £24.62, and 28% of it goes in income tax and National Insurance.
Your next £100 of overtime: you keep £72. A month with a lot of overtime has income tax taken as though that pay carried on all year, so one payslip can take more and the following ones give it back. National Insurance is worked out on each pay period on its own and is not evened up afterwards.

Questions

Common questions

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

No. Overtime is ordinary pay: it is added to your earnings and taxed at the rate that applies to that part of your income. On £32,000 for 37.5 hours a week, 5 overtime hours a week at 1.5 times pay come to £6,400.00 and leave £4,607.96, because 28% of the extra goes in income tax and National Insurance.

Why did my payslip lose more than that in one month?

A large overtime month is taxed as though that level of pay carried on all year, so a payslip can take more than the yearly sum suggests. A cumulative tax code corrects it over the following months, and the year ends on the right figure.

How much is an hour of overtime worth after tax?

At £16.41 an hour and 1.5 times for overtime, an overtime hour is £24.62 before tax and £17.72 after income tax and National Insurance on a salary of £32,000.
