How it is worked out

What these figures are, and what they are not

Your taxable income for the income year, 1 July to 30 June, is your pay less the standard deduction for work-related expenses, which an employee gets without claiming anything. Income tax is charged on it on the resident tax scale, which starts with a tax-free threshold. The Low Income tax offset comes off your income tax, and never off the Medicare levy. The Medicare levy is charged on the same taxable income and shaded in for low incomes. A HELP or other study loan repayment is a share of your repayment income above the minimum repayment income.

Questions

Common questions

Is a higher salary always better?

Not always by as much as it looks. Each extra dollar loses income tax, the Medicare levy and any study loan repayment at your marginal rate, so the table shows what each offer leaves you and the rate on your next dollar of each.

How is income tax worked out in Australia?

As a resident you pay nothing on the first $18,200 of taxable income. Above it the rate starts at 15% and rises through the scale's brackets to 45% on income over $190,000. Only the part of your income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

What is the Low Income tax offset?

An offset of up to $700 that comes off your income tax, never off the Medicare levy. It is the full amount up to $37,500 of taxable income, then reduces until it reaches nothing at $66,667. It cannot take your income tax below nil.
