How it is worked out

What these figures are, and what they are not

The answer is the smallest whole-euro salary whose take-home is at least what you asked for. Whatever period your figure is for, the salary is worked out as paid monthly, because how often you are paid decides the PRSI each pay day meets; a week's take-home is that year's take-home divided by the weeks in a year. Take-home does not always rise with pay: where USC starts to apply, a little more pay can leave a little less, so the search checks below its answer as well as above it.

Income tax is charged on your pay after any pension contribution: at the standard rate up to your standard rate cut-off point and at the higher rate above it, less your tax credits. USC is charged on your pay before the pension contribution, in its own bands. PRSI is charged week by week on your gross pay, at the rate in force on each pay day.

Questions

Common questions

Why is the take-home a little more than I asked for?

The answer is a whole-euro salary, and the take-home of a whole-euro salary rarely lands on your figure to the cent. The salary shown is the smallest one that gives at least the take-home you asked for.

How is income tax worked out in Ireland?

Your pay after any pension contribution is taxed at 20% up to your standard rate cut-off point and at 40% above it. For a single person in 2026 the cut-off point is €44,000. Your tax credits then come off the tax: €2,000 personal tax credit and up to €2,000 employee tax credit for a single person. Income tax cannot go below nil.

How is PRSI charged on a bonus?

PRSI is a weekly charge that is never reconciled at the end of the year, so a bonus or one-off payment is charged in the pay period it is paid in, at the rate in force on that pay day. The Class A employee rate is 4.20% until 30 September 2026 and 4.35% from 1 October 2026.
